Since 2013, GRAMMY award-winning artist, teacher and performer, and drummer for internationally acclaimed funk-rock outfit, Galactic Stanton Moore has hosted his wildly popular "Spirit of New Orleans" (SONO) drum camp in his home town of New Orleans.
Since then, students have traveled from across the globe to immerse themselves in the music, history and spirit of The Crescent City and study with one of its most passionate, knowledgable and inspiring native sons.
Stanton Moore's 3-day "Spirit of New Orleans" drum camp invites students of all ages and playing abilities to enjoy a hands-on drumming experience where they will learn from Stanton and his special teaching guests. This year, Herlin Riley will be presenting the Sunday master class. Moore's mentor and New Orleans legend, Johnny Vidacovich along with other special guest instructors Shannon Powell and John Wooton will all be on hand for private lessons. Students work alongside SONO teachers on their own individual practice drum sets to amass a total of 24 hours of real playing time over the course of this incredible camp. SONO is a fun, low pressure environment where students can learn from some of the world's best players and educators.
SONO7 also offers nightly live performances from some of NoLa's most celebrated artists at two of the city's premier live venue. This year we are proud to present a Friday evening performance at d.b.a. from The New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars as well as a Saturday night show with Dragon Smoke at iconic NoLa live music venue, Tipitina's and our 7th Annual Sunday SONO7 Finale Concert at Snug Harbor with The Stanton Moore Trio. The finale concert also offers camp attendees a chance to step on stage and perform for a live audience.
Previous camp guest artists have included "King of Treme," Shannon Powell, famed guitarist Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Mardi Gras Indian icons, Big Chief Juan Pardo & The Golden Comanche, and Soul Rebels among others. Students work alongside SONO teachers on their own individual practice drum sets to amass a total of 24 hours of real playing time over the course of this incredible camp. SONO is a fun, low pressure environment where students can learn from some of the world's best players and educators.
Produced by Nine Beats USA and hosted at the iconic New Orleans Jazz Museum, the "Spirit of New Orleans" drum camp is open to drummers of all ages and ability levels. Three full days of playing plus three live shows in the greatest drumming city in America.
